face/grade read me
what is this?
- you guess which of two real students got a better grade on their bachelor/master thesis based on their face. each face has a score; all faces begin with the same one. win a matchup, score goes up. faces with similar scores get matched, so the game gets harder as it learns what people think a good-grade face looks like.
- this is a solo, free-time project. not research. it's meant to make people think and talk about lookism. i don't like lookism. i'd like there to be less of it.
- these are random bachelor/master's students of the science faculty that graduated between 2021–2024. students that graduated in 2025 are not included, since from 2025 the grading system moved from A–F to passed / passed with honours / did not pass.
who are you?
- i'm miro. i'm in my 2nd semester of master's in experimental biology of plants. my bachelor was in molecular biology and genetics. feel free to check out my thesis.
why did you make this?
- i believe that lookism is real. i think we judge people on how competent or intelligent they are based on their appearance a lot more than we care to admit. this is my attempt to confront you with your idea of what an A-student or an F-student looks like.
- i got this idea when struggling to write a review for the social network by david fincher. i found facemash sexist and contemptible but wondered whether the core mechanism could be used for something better.
did anyone consent to having their photo or thesis grade here?
- not explicitly. understand that IS photos are not mandatory and by choosing to upload one, you're making it visible to anyone logged into IS. similarly, thesis grades are visible to everyone with access to IS. only people with a valid @mail.muni.cz address have access to face/grade.
- however, if you find your photo here and don't like it, email me at 534070@mail.muni.cz, it will be removed within 8 hours, along with all data about it.
what gets logged about players?
- the matchups they play, what they pick, and a random per-browser ID. no IP, no MUNI login, nothing else.
how did you make this?
- claude opus 4.7 wrote 100% of the code. frontend is hosted on vercel, backend on supabase. i take responsibility for everything it does.
i think this is unethical / stupid / misguided…
- i don't. but i'd be happy to be convinced otherwise. all ideas, complaints, and questions can be sent to my mail.
